High school dance team's 'Avengers' routine hailed as 'a masterpiece'

Talk about a pep rally for Marvel fans.

The Performing Arts Crew Dance Team (PAC) at Walden Grove High School in Sahuarita, Ariz., performed an epic dance with an Avengers theme at their homecoming pep rally on Friday Sept. 6. And it was impressive, to say the least.

The seven-minute routine, choreographed by coach Kristi Lopez to go with the homecoming theme chosen by the student council, featured scenes from more than one Avengers flick and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Songs including the Beastie Boys’ “Intergalactic,” Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time,” and “Hooked on a Feeling,” by Blue Swede, provided the soundtrack. The team recreated several significant, emotional moments from the movies, too.

The hard working teens had already amassed quite a following with their previous routines, based on Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz, Pixar movies and other pop-culture treasures. And not only are they beloved online, but the team appeared on America’s Got Talent in 2018, before they were cut in the quarterfinals. Still, this routine attracted an overwhelming amount of attention. The official video has been watched more than one million times since it was posted Friday.

“We are in shock right now,” Lopez tells Yahoo Entertainment. “I mean, we love Avengers and Marvel and all those things, but we didn’t know that it would be this big.”

Lopez points out that none of her students are trained dancers, but they practiced several hours a day, seven days a week for a couple of months to prepare. When members aren’t going over routines, they’re building sets or fundraising for their public school’s team.

Senior Quincy Harmon, who danced in the role of Black Panther, says the Avengers routine was a special one for him, because he’s been on the team for four years and, while he didn’t begin dancing until high school, he’ll soon attend the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City.

“I’ve seen every Marvel movie,” says Harmon, 17. “I watch them as soon as they come out.”

But Kayla Brown, the senior who played Iron Man, insists that she’s the biggest Avengers fan on the team. She “freaked out” when she learned that she’d play Iron Man, because he’s one of her favorite characters.

Brown, who’s also 17, said there was a lot of pressure to get every detail right.

Avengers is really big right now. So we wanted to get it perfect,” she says.

And they did just that, as far as YouTube commenters were concerned.

Viewers said the video was “outstanding” and “a masterpiece.”

“I’m pretty sure these are the real Avengers,” one fan said. “The movies are just a biography about these people.”

Another quipped, “Their coordination isn’t human, but superhuman.”
